Full‑Time Care for 6 Weeks to 6 Years
At ChildRoots, every age has a place to flourish. From our RIE‑inspired infant rooms to our engaging preschool studios, we offer a continuum of full‑time care (Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m., September 8:00 a.m - 6:00 p.m.) that balances child‑led exploration with expert guidance.
Our emergent curriculum grows from your child’s interests, while specialist visits and community events weave together a truly modern village of support.
ChildRoots is a unionized workplace.

Community and Cohorts
We organize children into age‑based cohorts to nurture strong friendships, consistent social development, and deep family connections.
-
Six‑month age ranges ensure each group moves through milestones together. Infants who join as babies, where possible, advance with the same peers into toddler, fostering trust and belonging.
-
Two‑year age bands (3–5 years) balance developmental needs with stable peer groups. Each August, graduating 5‑year-olds make way for older toddlers, creating seamless transitions that preserve relationships and community. To accommodate new preschool for all classrooms, some cohorts may be adjusted during toddler to preschool transition.
-
By staying with one cohort from infancy through toddlerhood, children build lasting bonds and families gain an enduring network of support—making our community more than a school, but a true modern village.
Pre-School For All
Beginning September 2025, our Southeast and Northeast campuses will participate in Multnomah County’s Preschool for All program.
Dedicated PFA Classrooms: During our first year of participation, we will offer one room per site reserved for county‑selected children.
Aligned Curriculum: We integrate PFA standards for early literacy, math, and social‑emotional learning into our play‑based approach.
Selection & Support: Families can apply through the county portal; ChildRoots maintains the high standards of care and community that define our philosophy.
Learning Environments
Classrooms spark curiosity with hands-on provocations; safe indoor spaces and adventurous yards invite play-based learning. Through our Schema Project Framework—rooted in Piaget and our expertise—children choose projects and learn by experimenting and communicating. Rotating open-ended materials, sensory bins, and early drawing/writing weave into daily play, building confidence and a love of discovery.
Our Program
Infant Care and RIE Practice
Grounded in Magda Gerber’s Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE), we treat babies as capable individuals from day one. Respectful observation and gentle guidance replace rushed routines, allowing infants to develop at their own pace and form secure attachments.
Art and Science Based Curriculum
Every day, children choose between process art—open-ended materials that celebrate exploration—and science provocations. We provide time and materials daily: sometimes creative supplies for self-directed art; other times small groups lean into longer, teacher-guided investigations. The focus is the process of making and exploring, not a prescribed product or outcome.
Nutrition, Rest, and Wellness
Children are fueled by organic, vegetarian, nut-free meals and two wholesome snacks each day. For rest, we use mats instead of cribs and support gentle self-soothing within calm, predictable routines. Safety is anchored by clear health policies—illness exclusion guidelines, state-required immunizations, and proactive hygiene practices—to keep our community well.
Materials and Outdoor Play
Our beautiful, intentionally curated materials—from wooden blocks to sensory bins—rotate regularly to match developmental interests. Rain or shine, children spend time outdoors in engaging yards equipped for climbing, digging, and water play, supporting both gross‑motor skills and a love for nature.
Diapering and Potty Learning
Diaper changes occur every 1.5–2 hours (or as needed), with children involved whenever possible. We introduce standing changes and toileting skills gently, respecting each child’s readiness and pace.
Community Events
We offer four community events each year that celebrate our schools, the seasons, and our community. These events are significant in the lives of the children enrolled here, but they are also enriching for our teachers and parents.
