CHILD-FOCUSED LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

As part of the ChildRoots way, we strive to create child-focused learning environments. At each of our Portland, Oregon learning centers we provide a clean, safe, and welcoming space for every child under our care. This philosophy extends outside the classroom to our outdoor play areas, which are designed to provide children with opportunities to grow socially, physically, and intellectually.

In the classroom, the ChildRoots curriculum is presented in a way that engages children and assists in their development. The intellectual foundation of our learning environment is the Schema Project Framework. Created through a combination of the ChildRoots staff’s knowledge of childhood development and Piaget’s stages of cognitive development, the Schema Project Framework (or SPF) allows teachers and children to work together on their studies. Children take on a project of their choosing and learn through discovery. Discoveries happen through working with the project materials, verbal or non-verbal communication techniques, and experimentation.

Within ChildRoots’ learning environments, children are provided with a variety of educational and developmental tools. Toys are constantly present, refreshed consistently, and designed to provide cognitive engagement. Sensory bins are found in every classroom to provide children the opportunity to explore their environment through all five senses. Drawing and early forms of writing are highly encouraged.
